"Mom, why does thunder make a sound? What is happening up in the sky?"

妈妈说：“闪电让周围空气瞬间变得非常热。”

Mom explained, "Lightning makes the air around it extremely hot in an instant."

热空气来不及慢慢散开，立刻向四周迅速膨胀。

The hot air cannot spread out slowly. It expands rapidly in every direction.

这一下推开空气，形成强烈的压力波，向外传播。

That sudden push creates a strong pressure wave that travels outward through the air.

压力波到达耳朵，就是雷声；远处会轰隆拖长。

When the pressure waves reach our ears, we hear thunder. From far away, different paths make it rumble longer.

乐乐点点头：“原来雷声是空气的压力波！”

Lele nodded. "So thunder is a pressure wave in the air!"

乐乐又问：“为什么先看到闪电，再听到雷声？”

Lele asked another question: "Why do we see lightning before we hear thunder?"

闪电让周围空气瞬间变热并迅速膨胀，产生向外传播的压力波，我们听到的就是雷声。

Lightning heats nearby air so quickly that it expands and sends out the pressure wave we hear as thunder.
