一片黄叶落进手心。悠悠问奶奶：“它是被冷风一下子冻黄的吗？绿色跑到哪里去了？”

A yellow leaf landed in her palm. Youyou asked Grandma, "Did cold wind suddenly turn it yellow? Where did the green go?"

奶奶说：“秋天白天变短，气温也在变化。树收到季节的信号，就会慢慢减少制造绿色的叶绿素。”

Grandma said, "In autumn, days grow shorter and temperatures change. These seasonal signals make trees gradually produce less green chlorophyll."

叶片里已有的叶绿素也会逐渐分解，树还会回收其中一些有用的材料，浓浓的绿色就慢慢退下去。

Chlorophyll already in the leaves also breaks down. The tree reuses some of its useful materials, and the strong green gradually fades.

“黄色和橙色的类胡萝卜素，其实一直住在叶子里。春夏时绿色太浓，把它们遮住了。”

"Yellow and orange carotenoid pigments were in the leaf all along. In spring and summer, the strong green hid them."

悠悠把自然落下的银杏黄叶、枫树红叶和一片绿黄相间的叶子排在一起：“原来每棵树都有自己的秋装！”

Youyou arranged a fallen yellow ginkgo leaf, a red maple leaf, and one leaf that was still green and yellow. "Each tree has its own autumn outfit!"

抱着装满秋叶的小篮子回家时，悠悠打了个大哈欠：“奶奶，我们为什么每天都要睡觉呢？”

秋天日照变短、气温变化，叶绿素减少并分解，原本就有的黄色和橙色色素便显现出来；有些叶子还会新形成红色的花青素。

Seasonal signals from shorter autumn days and changing temperatures cause trees to make less chlorophyll, while existing chlorophyll breaks down and reveals yellow and orange pigments already in leaves; some leaves also make new red anthocyanin pigments.
