Leaves rustled and tiny ripples crossed the lake. Qiqi opened her hands. "What makes the invisible air start moving?"

爸爸指指阳光和树荫：“太阳给地面加热，可草地、水面、屋顶升温的快慢不一样。”

Papa pointed to the sunshine and shade. "The Sun warms the ground, but grass, water, and rooftops do not warm at the same rate."

地面受热不一样，会让空气有的上升、有的下沉，慢慢形成气压差。

Uneven heating makes air rise in some places and sink in others, gradually creating differences in air pressure.

气压差会推动空气从气压较高的地方流向气压较低的地方——这股流动就是风。

Pressure differences push air from places with higher pressure toward places with lower pressure — and that moving air is wind.

山谷、树林和高楼还会让空气转弯、分流或挤过窄处，所以风的方向和快慢会改变。

Valleys, woods, and tall buildings can make moving air turn, divide, or squeeze through narrow gaps, changing the wind's direction and speed.

琪琪举起丝带：它朝一边飘，风车跟着转，湖面细波也向前跑。看不见的空气，留下了看得见的线索。

Qiqi raised a ribbon. It streamed one way, the pinwheel spun, and ripples hurried across the lake. Invisible air had left visible clues.

A breeze shook loose a golden leaf. Qiqi caught it and asked another question: "Why do leaves turn yellow?"

太阳让地表受热不均，使空气发生升降并逐渐形成气压差；气压差推动空气从较高气压处流向较低气压处，形成了风，地形还会改变它的方向和快慢。

The Sun heats Earth's surface unevenly, making air rise and sink and helping pressure differences form. Those differences push air from higher toward lower pressure, creating wind, while terrain changes its speed and direction.
