掩耳盗铃：比喻自己欺骗自己，以为看不见、听不见，事情就不存在。古文写的是盗钟，后来演化为“掩耳盗铃”。

Literally, covering one’s ears while stealing a bell; it means fooling yourself into believing a problem is gone simply because you ignore it. The classical source tells of a large bronze bell.

从前，有个人路过一座古宅，看见院里挂着一口漂亮的大钟。

他想偷偷搬走大钟，可钟又大又重，怎么也抬不动。

He tried to sneak the bell away, but it was far too big and heavy to lift.

他想：“用木槌把钟敲开，不就能一块块带走了吗？”

Then he thought, “If I break it into pieces, I can carry it away bit by bit.”

木槌刚碰到大钟，响亮的钟声就一下传遍了村子。

The instant the mallet touched the bell, a great ringing sound rolled across the village.

他赶紧捂住自己的耳朵，又敲了一下，心想：“这回没人听见了！”

He covered his own ears and tapped again, thinking, “Now no one can hear it!”

可是，村民们听得清清楚楚，纷纷循着钟声来到院门口。

But the villagers heard every ring and followed the sound straight to the courtyard gate.

老人说：“你听不见，别人却听得见。这就是掩耳盗铃呀！”

The keeper said, “You may block your own ears, but everyone else can still hear. That is covering your ears while stealing a bell!”

他红着脸道了歉，把钟留在原处。从此，他不再用假装来逃避真相。

He apologized and left the bell where it belonged. From then on, he stopped pretending that problems disappeared when ignored.

捂住自己的耳朵，改变不了真实发生的事。做错了要诚实面对，及时改正。

Hiding the truth from yourself does not change it. Face mistakes honestly and make them right.
