一天栗子不多，他说：“早上三颗，晚上四颗。”

One day he said, “Three in the morning and four in the evening.”

猴子们一听早上只有三颗，全都不高兴地摇头。

Hearing that morning meant only three, the monkeys shook their heads unhappily.

老人换个说法：“那就早上四颗，晚上三颗吧。”

The keeper changed the wording: “Then four in the morning and three at night.”

猴子们立刻欢呼，却没发现一天还是一共七颗。

The monkeys cheered, not noticing that the daily total was still seven.

老人把两篮栗子放在一起，请它们重新数一遍。

The keeper set both baskets together and invited them to count again.

大家明白了：朝三暮四，变的是说法，不是总数。

They understood: morning-three-evening-four changed the words, not the total.

从此老人把分法讲清楚，猴子们也学会先看完整。

After that, the keeper explained the whole plan, and the monkeys learned to look at the full picture.
