小树伸手接住一滴雨：“这些水以前藏在哪里？云朵里怎么会有这么多水呢？”

Xiaoshu caught a drop on his palm. “Where was this water before? How did so much of it get into the clouds?”

爸爸说：“太阳照暖海洋、湖泊和湿润的土地，一部分水会变成看不见的水蒸气，跟着空气向上升。”

Papa said, “The Sun warms oceans, lakes, and damp ground. Some water becomes invisible water vapor and rises with the air.”

“湿润的空气升到高处，会慢慢冷下来。水蒸气在空气中的微小颗粒周围凝结成许多小水滴；在很冷的云里也可能形成小冰晶，云就形成了。”

“As moist air rises, it gradually cools. Water vapor condenses into tiny droplets around small particles in the air; in very cold clouds, ice crystals can form too. Together they make a cloud.”

“云里的小水滴会碰在一起、合成更大的水滴，小冰晶也会慢慢长大。它们一直受到重力；长得足够大时，就会向下落。”

“Inside a cloud, tiny droplets can bump together and join into larger drops, while small ice crystals can grow too. Gravity acts on them all along; once they grow large enough, they begin to fall.”

“大水滴会落成雨；有些冰晶落进较暖的空气时，也会融化成雨滴。雨水进入土壤、溪流和河海，太阳一照，又会开始新的旅行。”

“Large drops fall as rain, and some ice crystals melt into raindrops as they pass through warmer air. Rainwater enters soil, streams, rivers, and seas, and sunlight begins the journey again.”

第二天太阳出来了。小树发现昨天的水洼只剩一圈湿痕：“这里有不少水蒸发回空气里，准备下一次旅行啦！”

The Sun came out the next day. Xiaoshu found only a damp ring where yesterday's puddle had been. “A lot of that water evaporated back into the air, ready for another journey!”

一阵雨刚停，阳光从小树身后照来，前方的雨帘里出现一道彩虹。小树惊喜地问：“彩虹是怎么来的？”

Just after a shower, sunlight streamed from behind Xiaoshu and a rainbow appeared in the rain ahead. Delighted, he asked, “How is a rainbow made?”

太阳让地面的水蒸发；湿润空气上升冷却后，水蒸气凝结成云滴，在很冷的云里也可能形成冰晶。它们不断长大并在重力作用下落，水滴直接成为雨，冰晶也可能融化成雨。

The Sun evaporates water from Earth's surface. As moist air rises and cools, water vapor condenses into cloud droplets; ice crystals can form in very cold clouds too. As they grow, gravity pulls them down: droplets fall as rain, and ice crystals may melt into raindrops.
