Papa said, “Stars are actually very distant suns. By the time their light reaches our eyes, each one looks like a tiny point.”

“Earth is wrapped in an atmosphere. Its air is always moving, with slightly warmer and cooler pockets continually mixing.”

“As starlight passes through those shifting pockets of air, it bends ever so slightly again and again, quickly changing the direction and amount of light that reaches our eyes.”

“于是星星看起来忽明忽暗、轻轻跳动，像在眨眼。行星送来的光像一个极小的圆面，许多变化会互相平均，所以通常更稳定。”

“That makes a star seem to brighten, dim, and wobble—as if it were blinking. A planet's light comes from a tiny disk, so many little changes average out and it usually looks steadier.”

小树又认真看了看：远处的星星果然一闪一闪，那颗明亮的行星却大多稳稳地发着光。

Xiaoshu looked carefully again. The distant stars really did twinkle, while the bright planet mostly shone with a steady light.

这时，云朵慢慢遮住星光，几滴雨落在叶子上。小树又问：“雨是从哪里来的呢？”

Just then, clouds slowly covered the stars and a few raindrops tapped the leaves. Xiaoshu asked another question: “Where does rain come from?”

恒星的光穿过不断流动的地球大气时，一层层空气会让到达眼睛的光线方向和强弱发生小幅变化，所以星星看起来像在眨眼；行星通常更稳定。

As starlight passes through Earth's constantly moving atmosphere, shifting layers of air slightly change the direction and intensity of the light reaching our eyes, making stars seem to twinkle; planets usually look steadier.
